Growing Green: Boulder Associates Architects new offices seek LEED Certification

8.1.07

Boulder Associates Architects, a healthcare and senior living design firm with offices in Boulder, Colo., and Sacramento, Calif., is expanding its Boulder office and relocating its Sacramento office; both projects are seeking LEED Certification.

“We think LEED is a great measurement of sustainable design,” Tim Boers, AIA, Principal, said. “These new offices further provide examples of design which reduces our environmental footprint.”

This month, the headquarters expands from the third floor of the historic Citizen’s National Bank Building on Pearl Street, to the second floor. The new studio will house interior designers, graphic designers, and architects. The third floor office was the nation’s first LEED-CI v2 Certified project.

The Boulder Office tenant improvements include exposure of a long-hidden brick wall and the reopening of old windows. Materials used include wheatboard, laminated strand lumber, reclaimed pickle-barrel wood, Dakota Burl, and cork flooring. Internally, the second and third floor suites will be connected via a newly-installed spiral staircase in addition to the existing elevator and stairways.

The Sacramento Office, which has been located at 20th and J Streets since 2000, is relocating to a former bank building at 21st and N Streets. The renovation of the 7,500 s.f. free-standing building is being designed to meet LEED Gold criteria. The staff of 17 is expected to make the transition in early 2008.

“For us, this isn’t just the latest fad; sustainability is part of our practice and our culture,” Don Myers, AIA, Principal, said. “LEED certifying these offices is in line with our other sustainable business practices including off-setting our carbon emissions by planting trees, powering our offices power with 100% wind energy, and composting appropriate waste.”
