Sutter Modesto Graduate Medical Education

Sutter Modesto Graduate Medical Education

Modesto, CA

This project marks a significant step for Sutter Modesto, establishing a multi-site Graduate Medical Education program that expands access to care while supporting hands-on clinical training. The program began with a comprehensive scoping and pricing study for a 31,000-square-foot non-acute and 4,000-square-foot acute facility designed to serve the needs of graduate medical training.

The teaching clinic is organized to support real-time learning, with exam rooms directly connected to observation and teaching rooms where supervising physicians can monitor and guide residents during patient visits. As one of the first projects to implement Sutter Health’s updated visual design standards, the facility features a contemporary interior palette and flexible waiting areas that can be reconfigured for after-hours group learning.

Delivered within existing buildings, the project required significant adaptation to transform former residential and assisted living spaces into a lecture space and academic offices. The design team worked closely with leadership to coordinate structural and mechanical upgrades and ensure the program fit within the available footprint. This adaptive reuse approach demonstrates how existing facilities can be effectively repurposed to support evolving medical educational. The result is a cohesive environment that supports patient care, medical education, and resident well-being, providing a long-term home for graduate medical training in Modesto.
