Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home at Fitzsimons  |  Aurora, Colorado

Creating an operationally efficient model nursing home of the future was the main focus of this project. Flexible “family” clusters are organized in two 42-bed and two 48-bed units, allowing for effective use of Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) staff-to-resident ratios on all shifts. Decentralized serving kitchens and dining rooms reduce the travel distance and staff time spent transporting residents, and the flexible design allows clusters and units to change the services they provide as resident needs change.

This project won the AIA/AAHSA Design for Aging Review Citation Award, and the Contract Magazine/The Center for Health Design/AIAS/Medquest Communications Healthcare Environment Award, Honorable Mention.
