HealthSouth Mesa Rehabilitation Hospital  |  Mesa, Arizona

This 48,700 s.f. rehabilitation hospital houses 40 private patient rooms, an indoor therapy gym, an outdoor therapy courtyard, dining, facilities, and an in-house kitchen. The long building exterior is broken up into smaller elements, and an easily-identifiable tower with clerestory glass highlights the main entry and creates a beacon from the street. Inside, the facility contains a nurse station with visual control over the entire patient wing, which helps to reduce staffing requirements and increase efficiencies. Tilt-up concrete construction was used for the building envelope, which reduced the construction schedule by eight weeks and also resulted in a lower-than-typical construction cost.

Sustainable design elements include the use of sunshade devices on the windows and a white TPO roofing membrane to reduce heat gain, and low-water use landscaping.
