Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation Primary Care 3838 California

San Francisco, CA

The Sutter Pacific Medical Foundation Primary Care 3838 California is a 17,775 s.f. project spanning three floors of a pre-existing eight-story office building in San Francisco. The project transforms an existing space into a dedicated full-floor primary care clinic supported by on-site imaging and laboratory services, strengthening Sutter Health’s expanding ambulatory network and broadening access to coordinated outpatient care.

Because the building was originally constructed in the 1970s and remained occupied during construction, the work required careful phasing and the safe removal of hazardous materials. The team used laser scanning to verify existing conditions and deployed robotic layout technology to improve precision during construction. The layout robot from Dusty Robotics mapped wall framing on site, helping the team adapt to unforeseen constraints with greater confidence and accuracy.

The clinic includes 23 exam rooms, three exam-plus rooms, and one procedure room organized around a centralized reception area that guides patients clearly through the space. Exam rooms and care team areas are arranged to balance privacy with visibility, while medication rooms, clean and soiled utilities, and staff collaboration spaces are positioned to support efficient daily operations and team-based care. The completed clinic reflects a thoughtful balance of technical coordination and patient-centered design, delivering a flexible environment built to support long-term outpatient growth.
