HCA Riverside Community Hospital Graduate Medical Education Program

Riverside, CA

HCA had a vision to create a forward-thinking learning space to provide their graduate medical students with the advanced technological tools they would need to become leaders in their field. Featuring adaptable sim labs and seamless technological integration, the facility is both a cutting-edge learning environment and an inviting dormitory setting for students and staff. With this 28,440 s.f. tenant improvement project, Boulder Associates designed a flagship location for HCA’s graduate medical education program at Riverside Community Hospital.

Creating ample space for collaboration was a focal point of the design process: small huddle rooms provide a home-base for student teams, while larger lounge areas offer a diverse array of seating configurations and lighting options for group or individual study. Intelligent classrooms and conference rooms, equipped by M3 Technology Group with networked audio-visual systems, create seamless integration for presentations and virtual learning.

The third floor houses patient sim rooms that are adaptable for all eight modalities provided at the Riverside location. Featuring fully functional headwalls and smart control rooms, the spaces were equipped with additional outlets and electrical boxes to provide flexibility and accommodate new technologies or changes within the program.

Spacious kitchen and living areas offer students a serene space in which to study and decompress with sleek, modern amenities. Twelve individual dorm rooms come equipped with areas for sleep and study, with multiple lighting options including a diffuse overhead drum and bedside sconce. An additional breakout kitchen space provides a private area for teachers, mentors, and other staff to eat and lounge.

Although the construction process was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, the BA team rallied to keep the project moving forward and succeeded in passing inspections on-time and completing the project on its original schedule.
