Saint Anthony Hospital Oncology Expansion

Saint Anthony Hospital Oncology Expansion

Lakewood, CO

The Saint Anthony Hospital Oncology Expansion is a 22,000-square-foot tenant improvement occupying the entire fourth floor of an existing medical office building on the Saint Anthony Hospital campus. Developed for CommonSpirit Health, the project brings together a comprehensive range of oncology services on a single floor. The program is organized around two primary zones: medical oncology and infusion, with an integrated prefabricated modular pharmacy on one side, and a surgical oncology clinical practice—serving subspecialties including women’s and breast, head and neck, and general surgical oncology—on the other. This holistic integration of cancer treatment services reduces the need for patients to travel between facilities and supports a more connected care experience.

The team carried forward validated infusion bay configurations and exam room layouts, ensuring operational familiarity and easing staff transitions between facilities. The clinical layout follows established standards, but the team developed a distinct interior identity. Because the building is separate from the main hospital, a unique finish palette was applied while retaining signature elements such as decorative glazing panels at the infusion bays. A key design challenge emerged mid-process when the team discovered that preserving the existing electrical infrastructure would yield significant cost savings. Collaborating closely with the contractor and preconstruction services, the team revised the design to accommodate the existing electrical rooms without compromising the clinical program.

Patient comfort and well-being were central to the interior design approach. Integrated acoustics, lighting, and biophilic design strategies were employed to create a nurturing, welcoming environment for patients with compromised immune systems. All applied finish materials are Red List free, meaning they contain no chemicals of concern—a meaningful commitment in an oncology setting. The lighting design carefully avoids direct downward glare, using task lighting in clinical alcoves and soft perimeter lighting in infusion areas where patients spend extended time. Nearly all infusion bays have access to natural light. Seating alcoves at check-in and check-out areas provide comfort and privacy for patients and companions alike. Furniture, accessories, artwork, and decorative elements were coordinated with furniture, accessories, and art consultants to achieve a cohesive, hospitality-inspired environment that feels intentional and complete.
