PMB Santa Clara Valley Health Center at Bascom Station

San Jose, CA

This 160,000-square-foot tenant improvement occupies six clinical floors of a newly constructed medical office building, with the lower levels reserved for parking. Developed for Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, the building consolidates multiple aging clinic locations under one roof, bringing together an expansive range of services – including adult and pediatric urgent care, adult medicine, pediatric primary and specialty care, OB-GYN, MFM, behavioral health, pharmacy, lab, diagnostic imaging, dental, and a café – all designed to meet OSHPD 3 requirements. Conference spaces were designed to support community events and group medical appointments, and the conference room adjacent to pediatric healthy lifestyles includes a teaching kitchen.

Because the building was originally designed as a standard office building, its geometry created real constraints for clinical planning. The clinical program began at level five above four floors of parking, making wayfinding a central design priority. The team served a patient population that speaks approximately seven languages, so they developed a wayfinding strategy focused on universal iconography, color-coded department differentiation, and a deliberate visual sequence on each floor. Framed portal openings mark the transition from elevator lobbies into waiting areas. Curated wall graphics appear at key moments along patient corridors, reinforcing orientation and creating a sense of journey from arrival through the clinical spaces beyond. These elements were preserved through sustained design advocacy, even as the broader material palette was refined throughout the project.

Delivered without shifting the first patient date despite an accelerated construction timeline and concurrent shell building work, the facility represents a significant expansion of outpatient access for the county – replacing scattered, outdated spaces with a single, cohesive environment built to serve a diverse community for years to come.
