California Pacific Medical Center Mission Bernal Hospital  |  San Francisco, California

Sutter Health affiliate California Pacific Medical Center’s overall goal is to develop an efficient citywide system of care delivery. Revitalizing what once was St. Luke’s 140-year-old campus with a modernized replacement hospital aids in the continuation of providing high-quality care to the diverse population of the Mission District and its surrounding neighborhoods.

Sutter Health’s pivotal goal was to consolidate services and buildings within their California Pacific Medical Center citywide system. The 215,000 s.f., seven-floor Mission Bernal replacement hospital has 120 beds and continues to maintain and improve critical services such as an emergency department, birthing department, medical/surgical, and intensive care unit.

By using lean methodology, the design team broke down traditional department hierarchies, allowing for more flexibility with sharing spaces and becoming easily adaptable for multiple users.

This project was delivered employing a highly successful Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach, with an Integrated Form of Agreement (IFOA). SmithGroup is the Architect for this project, with Boulder Associates being Associate Architect.

The site was master planned to allow for phasing of the project around a historic 1970’s building and allowed for the continued occupancy of the nearby existing acute care building until the new hospital could be occupied.

The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification and will likely achieve it.
